  • I Am My Kids Mom

I am my kids mom, not because I carried him for nine months and spent 20 hours in labor before I finally gave birth to him.
I am my kids mom, not because I herd him off to daycare so I can work my 40+ hour a week job to support the lifestyle I think I can't live without.
I am my kids mom, not because I won't let the daycare worker tell me about his first step he took since I wasn't there to see it and as his mother I am entitled to have the first time I see him walk be considered his first step.
I am my kids mom, not because I want him to be proud of me for all of my accomplishments in education and career that led me to neglect him because I felt my education and career were more important (now I would never say that, but I show it in my actions).
I am my kids mom, not because I found a daycare for kids when they are sick, so I can go to work and not be there when he wants me most.
I AM my kids mom by being there to kiss his boo boos', to read him stories, to guide, nuture, and love him 24/7.
I AM my kids mom because even though I do need to work outside the home to make ends meet, I do it when my kid is in school, or when he has gone to bed for the night, or I sell my big house and move into a smaller one where we can afford the mortgage on one income.
I AM my kids mom because I'm THERE to teach him about the God the created him and loves him (even more than I do) and who sent his son down to this earth to die for him.
I AM my kids mom because I am there to show him through example how to be respectful, polite, and an upstanding citizen.
I AM my kids mom because I am THERE to teach him the morals and values that God expects us to live by and that will ultimately make his life more fulfilling.
Kids are one of the greatest gifts and greatest responsibilites that God BLESSES us with. Being a mother is one of the most challenging experiences we will ever face, but also the most rewarding.
I CHOOSE to be my kids mom!

    David John

It's been a while since I posted an update on here. It's been a very busy few weeks.  We arrived home from St. Croix on May 26th after a few delays.  On May 30 I had my first baby shower.  Then on June 7th we had our second baby shower.  Michael's birthday was on June 8th and much to our surprise my water broke that morning.  Michael was a work when it happened and I wasn't sure if that was what was going on, so I called my doctors office and they told me to come in so they could check it out.  I called Michael to let him know that I was on my way to the doctor and that I would call him when I knew what was going on.  Both of us thought that it was probably something else since all kinds of interesting and strange things happen to you while you are pregnant and David wasn't due for another month.  I got to my doctors office and sure enough, my water had broke so he sent me off to the hospital.  I called Michael and was like, "Happy Birthday! It's time to go to the hospital."  He thought I was joking at first, but quickly realized I was serious.  Michael had to stop by our apartment on the way to pack my hospital bag, which ironically I was planning on doing that day.  We had to send my mom to buy a car seat for us since we didn't have that yet.

I arrived at St. Joseph's hospital at noon.  Michael arrived soon after that.  According to my doctor I was already having contractions, but I didn't feel them until I was checked into the hospital and hooked up to an IV and the monitor to track the babies heart rate.  After a while I got up to walk around and could no longer feel the contractions.  They ended up having to put me on Pitocin to get things moving along.  I was also on antibiotics as a precaution becasue I had not reached the point yet in my pregnancy where they tested to see if  I had Group B Strep.  Thankfully my doctor was on call at the hospital that night.  He has a partner he works with whom I also like, but I was happy to have my own doctor there.  Finally after about 20 hours, David John was born at 3:57am.  He had the cord wrapped around his neck, but he was doing fine.  He is considered a late preemie.  He weighed 5 lbs. 14 oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long.  At St. Joseph's they usually give the baby directly to the mother after it's born because that is the best way for the baby to adjust to his new environment.  They had told us that they would need to examine him first because of being so early, but he was doing so good when he was born that they gave him to me right away.

About an hour and a half after David was born they moved us to the mother/ baby unit of the hospital and we were able to get a private room.  Michael and I were both very happy about that because he was able to stay at the hospital with us the whole time,  if you have a shared room then they have visiting hours for the dad's.  Our pediatrician arrived a few hours later and said that David looked to be doing very well for the stage a pregnancy he was born at.  He wanted to keep him in the hospital for 48 hours instead of 24 just for observation since he was early.  David did develop jaundice.  We were able to take him home, but had to put a light patch on him to treat him.  They call it a bili blanket, I think.  We had him on that from the time we got home til the next morning.  Then we had to go in and get his blood tested.  His blood tests came back good, so we were able to stop the treatment.

David lost about 8 oz. since he was born, but as of Monday he had gained 1 oz back.  He has his first Dr. appointment next Wednesday hopefully he'll be back up to his birth weight.  He sleeps all the time and the doctor told us that he would do that longer than a full-term baby would because he was early.  We have to wake him up to eat almost every time and after about 5 or 10 minutes he's usually asleep again.  He's starting to wake up on his own a little more.

We are very happy parents, and are AMAZED at how much God has blessed us!

This is from the baby shower the day before I went into labor.

Here we are in the labor and delivery room at about 4pm.  I was hungry.  They only thing I had to eat was a granola bar and glass of orange juice at about 6am.  Once David was born my nurse fed me some juice and graham crackers.  A graham cracker has never tasted so good!

My mom and sister came by to visit for a little while

In our mother and baby unit room a few hours after David was born.

    St. Croix

We are in St. Croix for Michael's job.  We'll be here for four weeks.  It's the biggest of the U.S. Virgin Islands.  It's not much of a tourist spot, but they are trying to attract more tourists.  They do have a nice resort area, but I haven't been over there yet.  Where we are staying is pretty close to the resort area though.  We are staying at Club St. Croix.  It's a group of individually owned condos that are rented out when the owners aren't staying in them.  It's set up much like a hotel.  They have tennis courts, a pool, beach access, and a restaurant that overlooks the pool and beach.  They drive on the left side of the road here, which is has been very confusing for me, but at least I'm not the one driving.  Michael and his co-worker have been doing a good job with the driving though.  There are a lot of lizards.  We even had one in our closet last night.  The weather is in the 80s and very humid, much like an Iowa summer. These pictures were taken at the beach where we are staying.  The water is very clear, but the is a lot of sea weed at this beach.  Michael says the beaches where by his work are a lot nicer.
